What inspired you to start 28Litsea?
28 Litsea is my heart + soul that I balance with my full-time work as a school counselor. Creating skincare products was something I started doing about twelve years ago as a way to recharge from my job as a counselor. At that time, I started becoming more mindful of what I was putting in and on my body. I grew an awareness of the ingredients in many of the products I was using and started researching cleaner alternatives. Making my own products allowed me to handpick the ingredients I wanted to incorporate into my formulas.
When someone uses my products, I want them to feel the love and intention that went into making them. I want them to take care of themselves and to feel good about what they are putting on their skin.
Tell us about your products + the process behind the final product.
28 Litsea currently consists of small-batch lip balms, body scrubs and body oils made with only clean ingredients. I love the process of formulating and creating products. It really requires you to be in a different creative mindset and to focus on the ingredients being blended, the scents, and the beauty of the whole process. All my products go through numerous revisions before they are ready to be tested by a group of loyal friends and customers.
What do you enjoy the most about owning your own business?
I love the connections I have made with customers, other brand owners, bloggers, and retailers. The amount of talent out there is incredible. It is also very rewarding to create something that inspires others to slow down and care for themselves.
What ( if any ) challenges do you face while trying to balance business, family, friends, + you time?
There are so many positive things about being a small business owner and creating your own brand. I think the biggest struggle I have is with balancing it all. My job as a school counselor can be very draining and over the years I have had to make hard decisions to either delay or postpone business opportunities which has impacted the growth of 28 Litsea.
I often say that 28 Litsea is a one-woman show but the truth is I couldn't manage it all without the help of my husband. Besides the fact that he is at the post office everyday shipping orders, he is my biggest supporter and sounding board.
You learn so much about yourself when starting/owning a business - what is something you’ve learned about yourself personally + professionally?
Starting and owning your own business can be the most rewarding and challenging experience. The biggest thing I have learned is that trusting my gut and pushing myself out of my comfort zone has been vital in growing my brand. Creating products and running my business is something I am so passionate about. Ultimately, taking risks, learning from mistakes and believing in yourself is key.
What about your business are you most excited about for the future? What goals do you have for 28Litsea?
I am very excited about a new product that is in the early development stage. My hope is to launch late fall. The goal of 28 Litsea has always been to create a line of small-batch, high quality products that are effective and affordable. It is also very important to me to continue researching more sustainable options for my packaging. Right now, Blended With Flowers Exfoliant For Body comes in a jar made from PCR - post-consumer resin. This means it is made from water bottles/soda bottles that are collected and reprocessed into new packaging instead of ending up in landfills. It is such a great option that I hope will be available for lip balm tubes
